Categories and Tags
An important key to budgeting is to identify the categories (and sub-categories) of expenses and income. To organize your budget and understand from what sources your income is generated and to what places your revenue goes, sorting the transactions into categories is a useful effort.
Categories act as identifiers of types of expenses and you can create multiple categories useful to your own budgeting purposes. Each of your categories can also be divided into tags. Categories and tags act as parent-child identifiers of transaction items. Tags are the sub-categories, or child items of categories, and you can define multiple levels of tags.
For example, if you define a category such as "insurance" and a tag such as "car" then typing "insurance, car" into the Category field identifies that transaction as relative to car insurance. Later, an "insurance" search will bring up all transactions related to insurance, and those items related to your car will be tagged as such. If you define a category-tag combination like this: life, car, honda, the category is further defined as the car insurance for the Honda, versus another vehicle you may own and insure.
Other common budget examples may include:
Category | Tags |
Utilities | Phone, Electric, Water, Sewer, Gas |
Household | Mortgage, Taxes, Repairs, Upgrades |
Insurance | Car, Home, Life, Health, Disability |
You will define categories and tags when you create new transactions .
